MUSICAL THEATER

Music by Marcia Marchesi

Book and lyrics by Patricia Marchesi

North and South, the Musical is a stage adaptation of English author Elizabeth Gaskell's 1855 novel. This two-act musical tells the story of Margaret Hale, a minister's daughter, who is forced to move with her father from the beautiful rural south of England to the northern industrial town of Milton. Amidst the social unrest of cotton mill workers fighting for a better life, Margaret meets John Thornton, young owner of a mill. Their compelling and tempestuous romance is set against a backdrop of growing tension between "Masters" and "Hands," in a conflict-ridden world where only love can conquer all differences.

North and South was received with high enthusiasm by the audience during the sold out staged reading sessions at the Carsen Theater (Dairy Center for the Arts) in Boulder, Colorado in September 2010. An article about the stage adaptation of the novel is included in the book "Adapting Gaskell: Screen and Stage Versions of Elizabeth Gaskell's Fiction" (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2013).

The school bully locks a student into the janitor's closet, and he dreams up a hilarious (and as it happens in dreams, sometimes nonsensical) fairy-tale, involving the Taylor High students and faculty, in which he and his best friend concoct a plan to win the heart of Taylor High's prom queen, on whom he has a crush. Full of hysterical plot twists and memorable tunes, Once Upon a Dream is sure to be a success with young and older audiences alike.

Once Upon a Dream was premiered in July 2008 at the Center for Musical Arts in Lafayette (CO) during their "Broadway Bound" Musical Theater Summer Camp.  It was received with extreme enthusiasm by both the cast and audience.
